Snow-load roof design in Montana
Every house in Montana is designed to a number most owners never see: the ground snow load at its exact site, in pounds per square foot. That number swings from the valley floors of Yellowstone County to the mountain fronts of Gallatin and Flathead counties, sometimes within an hour's drive, and it sets roof pitch, framing, panel gauge, fastening pattern, and snow retention before anyone mentions color. The reason the page exists: bids get written every winter that assume a load instead of citing one. Montana publishes real sources, a state rule table for incorporated cities and a university study with an interactive finder for everything else, and a roof expected to carry decades of winters should start from one of them.
Ground load and roof load are two different numbers
Ground snow load is the design weight of snow on the ground at a site. A structural engineer converts it into a roof snow load using the pitch, exposure, surface, and thermal behavior of the specific roof, following the ASCE 7 standard that Montana's adopted codes reference. Missoula County's published IRC design criteria show the pattern in one document: the county adopts the 2021 codes, sets a 30 psf minimum design roof snow load, and determines ground snow load site-specifically per ASCE 7.
The distinction matters when reading a bid. A quote that says "rated for heavy snow" names neither number. A quote worth signing states the ground snow load it used, the source for it, and the roof load the design carries. On a metal roof the conversion cuts both ways: a slick standing-seam surface sheds load and lightens what the framing holds, but only if the sliding snow has somewhere safe to land.
Where the number comes from
For incorporated Montana cities and towns, the governing reference is the design ground snow load table in ARM 24.301.154, the state administrative rule that the City of Bozeman design criteria direct designers to. For any specific site, incorporated or not, the Montana State University Civil Engineering department publishes Snow Loads for Structural Design in Montana (revised 2004) and maintains an interactive snow-load finder built on it. You will notice this page prints no per-city load numbers. That is deliberate. The ARM table and the finder are the authorities, elevation moves the answer within a single county, and a figure copied out of context is how roofs get under-designed. What the number changes on a metal roof
Once the ground snow load is fixed, every major decision on a metal roof inherits it. The table below is the chain of consequences.

Sliding snow is a design input, not a surprise
A metal roof does something in snow country that asphalt never does: it releases a winter's accumulation in seconds. That is the point, since the structure carries less, and it is also the hazard. A slide can bury a walkway, tear off a gutter, flatten a gas meter, or land on a lower roof that was never designed for the impact. Snow retention turns one violent release into many small ones, and its layout should be engineered against the site's ground snow load rather than eyeballed from the ground. On standing seam, clamp-on retention grips the seams without a single new hole. On exposed-fastener panels, retention must anchor through the panel into framing, one more argument for deciding retention before the roof goes on instead of after the first slide.
At the eave, melt and freeze concentrate. The City of Billings one- and two-family reroofing handout requires an ice barrier extending from the lowest roof edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line, a detail worth copying anywhere in the state whether or not your building office requires it. Who reviews the design where you live
Montana permitting is a patchwork, and snow-load review travels with it. Inside Bozeman city limits, the City of Bozeman Building Division reviews permits, while Gallatin County itself issues no building permits, so a Gallatin Valley address outside Bozeman or Belgrade falls to the state DLI Building Codes Program, phone (406) 841-2056. Missoula County enforces the state codes countywide through its own building division. In the Flathead, Kalispell and Whitefish run city building departments, and the Whitefish Building Department supplies jurisdiction-specific design criteria, snow load included, on request at (406) 863-2410; unincorporated Flathead County has no county building department. Helena and Billings run city divisions as well.
The mountain and resort markets are where loads and stakes both run highest. Whitefish, Bozeman, and Kalispell carry higher-value homes at real elevation, standing seam is close to the default on new construction there, and an under-designed roof is an expensive mistake to unwind. Wherever the address sits, the sequence holds: confirm the office, then confirm the number.
