Ground snow load is the design weight of snow on the ground at a site, in pounds per square foot (psf). Structural engineers convert it to a roof snow load, and that number sets pitch, framing, panel gauge, clip and fastener spacing, and where snow retention goes. Finish is the other line worth reading: PVDF paint systems hold their color against high-elevation sun longer than entry-level polyester coatings, a point that matters on a roof you expect to keep for decades. No roofing trade license: how to verify a Montana contractor

Montana has no roofing-specific license and no competency exam for roofers. The statewide credential is a general contractor one: contractors with employees must hold it, and it verifies workers’ compensation compliance, not skill. It has long been called Construction Contractor Registration, and since January 1, 2026 it is statutorily a construction contractor license under MCA 37-45-201, which now reads that a person "may not engage in business as a construction contractor without a current license from the department". House Bill 239 (2025) moved the program from Title 39 into Title 37, chapter 45, while the Department of Labor and Industry's public pages still use the registration name as of July 2026.

The mechanics are modest. The DLI Construction Contractor Registration page administers the credential, and the application form lists a $70 non-refundable fee for a two-year term, with proof of Montana workers’ compensation coverage as the substantive requirement. Independent contractors without employees are exempt from the credential (MCA 37-45-104) and may instead hold an Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate under MCA 39-71-417, with a $125 fee. Nothing in either path tests whether the holder can flash a valley or space clips for a 60-foot panel run.
