Metal roof installation in Montana
The first panel lands on a Montana metal roof weeks after the job really starts. Before anything ships, the ground snow load for the address has to be pulled, the deck and framing checked against it, and the permit question answered, and that answer changes between a lot inside Billings city limits in Yellowstone County and a bench outside Kalispell in Flathead County, where no county building department exists.

The install sequence, start to finish

- Prepare the deck. Sound, dry, flat decking, with rot and delamination cut out rather than covered.
- Underlayment and ice barrier. The waterproofing layer the panels protect. The eave detail matters most, next section.
- Panels, flashing, penetrations. Valleys, sidewalls, chimneys, and vents are where installs succeed or fail; long straight runs are the easy part.
- Snow retention. Engineered to the load and placed above entries, walkways, meters, and lower roofs.
- Closeout. Where a building program has jurisdiction, the final inspection closes the permit and creates the paper a future buyer will ask about.
The buried details: ice barrier, ventilation, drip edge
The parts of an install nobody photographs are the parts that decide winter. An ice barrier is the self-sealing membrane at the eaves that keeps ice-dam meltwater off the deck, and Montana cities write it into their rules: the City of Billings reroofing handout requires an ice barrier extending from the lowest roof edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. Both documents were published for reroofs, but they show exactly what local reviewers look for, and the same assemblies govern a new install. Ventilation keeps the roof deck cold so snow melts evenly instead of refreezing at the eave; drip edge moves water off the fascia; the ice barrier catches whatever backs up anyway. A metal surface sheds snow better than most, but shedding is not a substitute for any of the three.
Snow load writes the spec sheet
Montana's published floors make the point. The City of Bozeman design criteria set a minimum design roof snow load of 30 psf after reductions and point to the ARM 24.301.154 table for ground snow loads by city. Missoula County's IRC design criteria carry the same 30 psf minimum under the adopted 2021 codes, and the City of Billings design criteria (March 2020) specify 30 psf plus drifting. Who permits a metal roof install
Montana permitting is a patchwork, and the pattern surprises people. Inside city limits, Bozeman runs its own Building Division, as do Kalispell, Whitefish, Helena, and Billings. Gallatin County itself issues no building permits, and Flathead County has no building department, so unincorporated projects in both fall to the state DLI Building Codes Program in Helena, phone (406) 841-2056. The outlier is Missoula County, which has enforced the state codes countywide since 2006. The details that separate installers
Long, straight panel runs are the part any crew can manage. The separating skill lives in the interruptions. Valleys have to carry two roofs' worth of water and sliding snow without a fastener in the flow line. Sidewall and headwall flashing must step water past the siding, not behind it. Chimneys and plumbing vents need boots and counterflashing that survive panel movement, because every Montana roof moves with the temperature. At the ridge, the choice between a vented and a sealed closure decides whether the attic ventilation path actually works.
Panel handling shows up in the finished surface too. Oil canning, the visible waviness in flat panel faces, is largely a function of how panels are formed, carried, and fastened. It does not leak, but on a large, sun-raked roof plane it is the difference between a roof that looks engineered and one that looks bent.
